Why the Moon Only Comes out Once A Month (fable)

Before she blessed her world with its prudence and wisdom, she gave the world her first loves. God put into the world the Sun and the Moon. The Sun and the Moon were best friends growing up. They were sisters after all. One day, the Moon decided she wanted to play hide and seek, so she asked her mother, God, to give them something to hide behind. God gave the world stars of all sizes so they could hide behind, and the Moon and Sun played hide and seek until their heart’s content. On the next month, the Sun decided that she wanted to play duck duck goose, so she asked her mother, God, to give them more sisters to play with. God gave the world Mars, Venus, Earth and Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. The Moon and Sun, and Mars and Venus, Earth and Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto played duck duck goose until their heart’s content. On the third month of the year, the new sisters decided they wanted to play ring around the rosie with the sun. They asked their mother, God, to give them a way to go round and a round in a circle. God gave the world orbit so all of her youngest children could play ring around the rosie around the sun until their heart’s content. But the Moon didn’t get to play ring around the rosie. She went to her mothers place of peace and asked, with tears in her eyes, “Mother God, why do they take me out of their games. Why can’t I orbit around my Sun mother, I was here first.” Her mother looked down at her with the kindest eyes and said “My dearest moon, I saw when you opened your eyes and counted while playing hide and seek. My beautiful moon, I saw when you ran to the firmament so they couldn’t catch you while playing duck duck goose. And my strongest moon I saw the tears in their eyes when they feared that you would find another way to deceive them in ring around the rosie.” The moon was completely shocked, she didn’t know that her mother could see that she had deceived them. She ran far away, embarrassed by what she had done. She hid in the shadows scared that her mother and her Sun and her sisters would see her. To this day, the Moon stays far away in the shadows, only coming out once a month to see what game her Sun and her Mars, her Venus, Earth and Mercury, her Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and her Neptune and Pluto are playing.

For this week, I have for you a fable I wrote to speak about the moon. Beautiful and mysterious, the moon. Enjoy this little sweet story and be careful when you go to play with the moon!
